Starting to learn biology

Well, I've not any biological background but I feel interested towards it. Can you biologists suggest me how to start? Like, from where I can start learning it, from the basic level. I'm from engineering and physics background.

Edit- I was advised to add the fields of biology that interest me. I would like to learn microbiology, genetics and plant biology. I should mention that I've very little to no knowledge in biology. So, advise me how to get started from basics. I really have no idea how and from where to start.

Biology Textbooks

History and Science of Cultivated Plants narrates how humans transitioned from foragers to farmers and have arrived at present-day industrial agriculture-based civilization. It entails myths, historical accounts, and scientific concepts to describe how human efforts have shaped and produced easier to grow, larger, tastier, and more nutritious fruits, vegetables, and grains from wild plants. Using examples of various economically and socially important crops central to human civilization, the book describes the origin of crop plants, the evolution of agricultural practices, fundamental concepts of natural selection vs. domestication, experimental and methodical plant breeding, and plant biotechnology.

Teaching and Learning resources for A-Level Biology

The biology lessons and resources are suitable for BTEC Level 3 Applied Science, International Baccalaureate (IB), Access to Science and Foundation Degree courses. In fact all Level 3 Biology courses, will benefit from the videos, lessons and knowledge check Work booklets (PDF).

All the A-level biology lessons and resources have been created by an experienced biology lecturer. So, you can rest assured you&rsquore getting high quality resources that will really help you learn, master and succeed in your A-level biology - helping you prepare for your exams and helping you with assignments and coursework.

Enjoy learning and revising A-level biology with handwritten notes videos and Topic specific work booklets (PDFs) - which provide you with the notes from the video lessons. You can test your retention and understanding with knowledge check questions and stretch your learning with application style questioning. All knowledge check work booklets have properly written answers for you to check your answers with.

Because examiners mark schemes don&rsquot provide you with properly structured answers - just key terms that examiners look for. What you write must be in context and well written (you can get marks deducted if what you write make no sense). So, by seeing properly written answers you&rsquore more able to start constructing your own ready for the exams - or structuring paragraphs properly for your assignment work.

Know what 'command' words mean to you.

Actively engaging in each biology lesson will ensure deep learning is taking place, and a complete understanding of biological concepts is embedded. Work through the content on diligently and you will truly master your A-Level Biology!

Good Luck with your teaching / learning,

Use the search bar to find topics, lessons, PDFs and definitions

Why is A-level biology so hard?

Because it&rsquos more about the application of knowledge rather just reiteration of &ldquofacts&rdquo. Also, A-level biology relies on your written english (specifically, how well you can write and communicate new concepts using your new biological vocabulary ). You&rsquoll learn lots of new terminology and its essential you understand these new terms and can define them - and use the appropriate language in the correct context. Learning A-level biology also relies heavily on your maths skills (basic percentage calculations, statistics, data / graph interpretation and analysis etc.) So, be aware that you are going to have to be good at basic maths to do well in a-level biology!

Learning biology is actually super good for developing so many skills because of its interdisciplinary nature.

How to do well in A-level biology?

To be successful in your A-level biology (or just about anything in life!) its going to take some significant effort on your part (A-levels are only easy if you put the work in!)

Follow these steps diligently and consistently.

Take responsibility - there is no-one, NO-ONE else responsible for your learning. You may not like to hear it but you have chosen to study a-level biology&hellip (for whatever reason). and that is going to take about 10-15 hours a week of consistent work . But it is your choice. No Excuses. There is no-one else to blame if you don&rsquot do well. (None of this, &ldquothe teacher went over that topic too quickly&rdquo, or &ldquoI was absent when we did that&rdquo &hellip or &ldquowe ran out of time and didn&rsquot do that properly in class&rdquo , or &ldquoIt&rsquos boring though&rdquo &ldquoI don&rsquot get it&rdquo bla bla bla&hellip . if you &ldquodon&rsquot get it&rdquo, keep going over it until you do, ask for help , use lots of different resources that go over the same thing, and don&rsquot give up! All the information and help you need is available. A lot of it is here, your teachers will help - just ask, YouTube has tons of great resources and don&rsquot forget your textbooks - which have all the answers! There is no shortage of information, help and guidance. So, take responsibility - take it upon yourself right now to learn, revise and succeed - no-one else is going to do it for you . So, don&rsquot procrastinate, blame shift or give up &hellip just crack on with it and do your best &hellip then try again and do better! Learning anything is just like doing push ups&hellip today you may only be able to do 3&hellip but if you never give up, soon you&rsquoll be able to do 50 without breaking a sweat&hellip it really doesn&rsquot matter what you&rsquore learning consistency, repetition and never giving up are the keys to success.

Read your textbooks and the content on these web-pages carefully and actively . Take your time to really read and absorb the information. Actively engage - that means re-write key points in your own way, underline and highlight information. For example every time you come across a new word (of which there will be loads in biology!) Highlight it, find the definition and write it out and underline the definition.

If a video lesson is available for a topic watch it in full (the video lessons contain lots of information in a short time, key words, definitions and most importantly they are a great way of learning and reinforcing important information. So, Actively watch video lessons in full. For example, watch the videos a number of times, write out the learning outcomes yourself and use them as a check list (later turning them into questions). Pause and rewind the lessons where necessary - pause the lessons and write out key points yourself.

Download any available PDF&rsquos. If a PDF activity or booklet is available download it and work through it. For example, the knowledge check booklets that accompany video lessons have all the notes from the lesson, so you can easily follow along with videos. Questions and answers in the PDF help you learn and revise. Answers to questions are properly written in full - this is super important as it allows you to see and practice how to construct answers in context to gain marks in an exam or assignment. (Mark schemes, for example only show the relevant &lsquomark&rsquo the &lsquokey words&rsquo which the examiner is looking for - but remember, your answers are to showcase your knowledge in a succinct, well written and contextualised manner&hellip something mark schemes (and in many cases your teachers) don&rsquot show you! Remember, points can be void if not written in the correct context or clearly demonstrate that you understand the topic being assessed.

Start writing synoptic essays now! So many students leave this right until the end of their a-level. But, it is super super important that you can link concepts together and fully understand how connected all the topics of biology are . So start right away. If you have only just started and only know about 3 things - think about those things synoptically - compose a question of your own and write a short synoptic essay. For example, let&rsquos say you&rsquove just begun your a-level biology and you have learned about some basic biochemistry, hydrolysis and condensation reactions and carbohydrates. Formulate a question based upon what you&rsquove done so far - &ldquoExplain the importance of condensation reactions in the formation of complex biomolecules&rdquo . Or, let&rsquos say you&rsquore midway though and have just covered the digestive system. Can you link the digestive system to all the other topics? Create a poster (mind map) with &ldquodigestion&rdquo in the middle and then loads of arrows coming from this topic to where it connects to all the others you&rsquove done so far. Then write a few essay questions and get writing! This is an excellent way to revise - and you&rsquoll not only begin connecting concepts, revising key points and terminology but you&rsquoll get that all important practice of writing synoptic essays and using the terminology in a contextualised way.

Draw. Create posters and biological diagrams - both illustrative (i.e. nice, big, bold colourful posters which help you revise structures and functions) and simple well illustrated, clear, annotated line diagrams - following the &lsquorules&rsquo of how to draw a biological diagram.

Exam practice. Download and go through loads of exam questions. You&rsquoll soon recognise the same questions and answers cropping up time and time again!

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat! There are No Short Cuts , so stop wasting your time looking for them - if you want to be awesome at anything, you have to embed that skill / knowledge into your subconscious mind - and that only happens though repetition. You have to repeat these steps over and over again until the topics are so well engrained answering exam questions or writing essays / assignments is second nature.

Every page has a consistent layout to help you find what you are looking for easily. You may like all the sections, but probably there will be some resources which suit your learning style best.

The StudyIB Biology site pages contain:

Key concepts - Flashcard sets

Key words and concepts in the form of flashcards help to break the Biology into memorable chunks.

Essentials - quick revision through the whole topic

Slides of revision notes to help in the review of key concepts and terminology. These slides summarise the essential understandings and skills in each topic. They contain short explanations in text and images - good revision for all students. They are ideal for test preparation.

Exam style question

These questions give an opportunity to try longer explanations in an IB exam style used in paper two. Model answers are provided, and can be revealed in one click. In some cases, videos explain the understandings and help demonstrate skills or applications.

Summary lists

A short and clear bullet point list of the understandings in the topic. Useful as checklists, and for revision planning.

These diagrams summarise the main sections of each topic for more visual learners.
Test if you can draw something like these concept maps from memory. There are three types of diagram, a full explainer, an outline spider diagram, and a list of key elements for each topic.

A good way to use these mind maps is to study the topic and the full diagram for ten minutes.

After studying, begin with the simple spider diagram and see how much you can complete from memory.

Test yourself - multiple choice questions

These quick questions arranged by topic allow you to test your understanding of the concepts.
The questions are self-marking, answered online enabling you to get instant feedback.
Examiner's notes and model answers give helpful hints and help you to learn from your mistakes.

Just for fun

Everyone needs a bit of light relief while revising.
These simple arcade games and card matching games provide just that, and they also help you learn.

Progress tracking

One excellent feature is that StudyIB tracks your progress as you revise.

The progress page is private to you but a great help in revision planning.

Click your name, in the top left corner, then "PROGRESS".

Video welcome

Hi, This website is for students of IB Biology, but others may find it useful. It is written by an experienced IB Biology teacher with contributions from some alumni students. On each page there is a range of revision resources outlined in What.

In Fall 2020, Dr. Ray will start as an Assistant Teaching Professor in The Department of Biology at Northeastern University.

Related Content

Once you have completed this online course, you will be ready to explore MIT's introductory biology courses on the MIT OpenCourseWare site.

The MIT Biology Department Introductory Biology courses (7.012, 7.013, 7.014, 7.015, and 7.016) all cover the same core material, which includes the fundamental principles of biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and cell biology. Biological function at the molecular level is particularly emphasized and covers the structure and regulation of genes, as well as the structure and synthesis of proteins, how these molecules are integrated into cells, and how these cells are integrated into multicellular systems and organisms. In addition, each version of the subject has its own distinctive material.

Biology Learning Goals

Students completing the requirements of the B.A. and B.S. Biology degrees learn to perceive biology not as a collection of facts, but as a dynamic conceptual framework involving many particular areas of research.

Both Biology degrees prepare students for careers in biology, biotechnology and health related fields. Consider which pathway to take (the B.A. or the B.S.) when considering your goals. Both degrees also prepare you to further your education in graduate and professional schools.

Students who complete the core classes and advanced electives gain fundamental science skills and a deep understanding of the biological principles governing life on our planet. Graduates obtain the skills needed to be independent, life-long learners, including the ability to evaluate scientific issues that affect daily life and society.

Gain foundational skills

Students graduating from the Biology program will be able to:

This skill requires students to:

  • Make observations
  • Identify significant open questions
  • Formulate hypotheses
  • Design experiments
  • Learn modern laboratory techniques
  • Collect and document data
  • Use quantitative reasoning to analyze, interpret, and present data
  • Collaborate with others to solve problems

These activities enable hypothesis-driven experimentation and analytical thinking. This approach to knowledge forms the basis of scientific research, guides the formation, testing, and validation of theories, and distinguishes conclusions developed through scientific reasoning from those that rest on unverified assertion.

Find, critically evaluate, and communicate information on biological questions.

This skill requires students to:

  • Identify appropriate information sources
  • Comprehend and critically analyze primary, secondary, and popular scientific literature
  • Distinguish between supported and unsupported conclusions in a given study
  • Use writing to distill meaning from a collection of information sources, logically organize ideas, and construct a cogent scientific argument
  • Convey the scientific argument through concise written and oral communication

These activities result in deeper more nuanced understanding of biological studies, their relationship to prior published work, and the formulation of future directions for a field. Graduates will be able to accurately communicate biological information, and the importance of underlying issues, to diverse audiences.
